Carol Brophy of the Bead Addict's Excuse in Keavy, Kentucky, while placing an order,
shares with us the problems dealing with her addiction:
"At first I was just buying them for me." Classic.
Later she let's slip: "I HAD to open a shop to take care of the surplus."
You can see the denial. I HAD to open a shop.
It's sad. I find it sad. Next week I start my thirtieth year of doing beads every day and I'm not addicted.
Some people are weak.

Playing Rushing Roulette with Your Special Order
or "Do I have to drive down there from West Virginny and fill it myself?"

It is in our best interest to get your order out as quickly as possible,
however, if we hurry we get sloppy and sloppy is just a wicked game of rushing roulette.

Fancy jasper, Indian agate, bloodstone and moss agate all seem to blend together.
I get strands of "fancy jasper" that have fancy, bloodstone and moss beads and they all almost look the same.

Flower Agate?
This is brown with almost a leopardskin look to it. It has a slight odor of diesel fuel
so it is at least a cousin to the leopardskins. Not very attractive but undoubtedly has a place.
Not the bead to highlight in a design unless you are making a necklace for your dog's graduation.

Unfortunately, our round fluorite is rough.
It will still cure all the problems that the most beautiful fluorite in the world will cure unless your problem is ugly fluorite.

Important!!!  Size Does Count
Beads below 4mm are usually more expensive than 4mm or even
5mm beads because you are paying for the labor, not the material.
There are many more 2mm beads than 4mm on a strand.
I estimate twice as many.

Garnets, Beautiful Curse of the Empire!
The garnets are frequently dyed.
It might or might not come off on your hands, neck, wrist, clothing, psyche.
Dyeing stones is endemic to the Indian stone trade. "It's what they do! That's all they do!"
Don't be shocked or upset or take it personally.
An easy test is to lick the beads then check your tongue in the mirror.
The red streak would be the dye.
But overall the Indians are a jovial lot and mean you no harm.
The garnet strands sometimes run a tad short.
And holes can be creatively drilled.
And sometimes they don't seem to roll so good.

Garnet sizes are "close."

Goldstone is not really a stone at all! It's not even real gold.
It's copper crystals in glass. And blue goldstone is hardly blue.
More of a black.

Hawk's Eye
(aka Blue Tiger's Eye)

Has that tiger'seye/tigeriron (matrix) look.
Not very blue but you aren't buying it as a substitute for lapis.
You are subtle and understated and using Hawk'seye in your designs proves it.

Don't Chew on the Hematine
You'll get, obviously, hematitis, "hernia of the mouth."
Your breath will reek of Minnesota (Minnesotosis).
The blind will mistake you for Jessie Ventura.
You will be shunned at log toss, bingo, perch fries, and -- Oh, My God -- Deer Camp.

But now, a sad note. We suspect our "hematite" and most of the other "hematite"
out there is really hematine, a synthetic. I can't tell the difference.
It lifts (hurts) like hematite, and that's good enough for me.
But in the interest of disclosure we are going to say it
might be hematine and then call it hematite.

Of the two kinds of jade, jadeite (see below) and nephrite, our "jade" is nephrite.
It's a bit expensive, isn't it?
Except for the snow jade which isn't so expensive, but what is that really?
I bought it as snow jade.
You need a book - Gemstones of the World.
