Basemetal means so much. Nickel, brass, plated brass, steel, plated brass, whatever.
I once almost bought a load of "sterling" rings from an Indian guy but they didn't pass the magnet test. He said they were the 80 per cent silver, that's why I could pick them up with the magnet.
